What is BMI?

Body Mass Index (BMI) is a simple calculation that uses your height and weight to estimate whether you are at a healthy weight. It is widely used by health professionals as a quick, low-cost screening tool to flag potential weight-related health risks across large populations.

How to interpret your BMI

BMI sorts adults into four broad categories. While a "normal" BMI is associated with lower risk for many chronic conditions, the number is only one piece of the puzzle. Your body fat percentage, waist circumference, fitness level, and family history all matter.

Limitations of BMI

Because BMI cannot tell muscle from fat, athletes and very muscular individuals may have a high BMI while being extremely lean. Conversely, older adults who have lost muscle may have a "normal" BMI while carrying excess fat. For a more complete picture, combine BMI with a body fat calculation and your lean body mass.

Frequently asked questions

What is a healthy BMI?

A BMI between 18.5 and 24.9 is classified as a healthy weight for most adults. Below 18.5 is underweight, 25–29.9 is overweight, and 30 or above is obese.

Is BMI accurate for everyone?

BMI is a useful screening tool for populations but has limits for individuals. It does not distinguish muscle from fat, so very muscular people may register as overweight despite low body fat. Pair it with a body fat measurement for a fuller picture.

How is BMI calculated?

BMI equals your weight in kilograms divided by the square of your height in metres (kg/m²). For imperial units, multiply weight in pounds by 703, then divide by height in inches squared.

Does BMI differ for men and women?

The BMI formula and categories are the same for adult men and women. However, women naturally carry more body fat at the same BMI, so interpret the number alongside other measures.
