How ideal weight is calculated

Ideal body weight formulas estimate a healthy weight from your height and sex. They originated in medicine — for example, to calculate drug dosages — and each makes slightly different assumptions, which is why the results vary. Seeing all four side by side gives you a realistic target range rather than a single, falsely precise number.

The healthy BMI range

The range shown at the top is derived from the healthy BMI band of 18.5 to 24.9 applied to your height. For most people this is the most practical reference, since it reflects population health data directly.

Beyond the number

Remember that these formulas ignore muscle and body composition. If you lift weights or are athletic, your healthy weight may be higher than the formulas suggest. Combine this with your body fat percentage for the most accurate view of your health.

Frequently asked questions

What is ideal body weight?

Ideal body weight (IBW) is a reference weight associated with good health for your height and sex. Several formulas exist — Robinson, Miller, Devine, and Hamwi — and they give slightly different numbers, so a healthy range is more useful than a single figure.

Which ideal weight formula is best?

No single formula is definitively best. The Devine formula is common in medical dosing, while Robinson and Miller are refinements. We show all four plus a healthy-BMI range so you can see the full picture.

Is ideal weight the same as a healthy weight?

Not exactly. Ideal weight formulas don't account for muscle mass or body composition. A muscular person may sit above their 'ideal' weight while being very healthy. Use it as a guideline alongside body fat and BMI.

Does ideal weight differ by age?

These classic formulas depend only on height and sex, not age. Body composition does shift with age, so consider ideal weight a general reference rather than a strict target.
